Atlanta homeowners pay less in property taxes compared to the national average, according to new data from ATTOM Data Solutions.

The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Rosewell MSA had an average property tax rate of $2,079 in 2016 and an effective tax rate 0.87 percent, which ranks No. 136 out of 217 MSAs nationally. The average estimated home value in the area was $238,230.

Fulton County homeowners paid the highest in average property taxes in 2016 at $3,324 in Atlanta. However, Gwinnett County and Dekalb County had the highest effective tax rate in the area at 1.03 percent.

Property taxes nationwide on single-family homes in 2016 totaled $277.7 billion, an average of $3,296 per home and an effective tax rate of 1.15 percent. The average annual property tax for owner-occupied single-family homes nationwide was $3,658, an effective tax rate of 1.21 percent. The average annual property tax for investment homes nationwide is $2,437, and the effective tax rate is 1.03 percent.
